David Hunley, DVM, DACVIM
(Oncology) • Associate Veterinarian
Education: Louisiana State University
Internship: North Carolina State University
Residency: Louisiana State University
Dr. David Hunley received his veterinary degree at Louisiana State university in 2001. During his time as a student, he initially planned to become a zoo veterinarian, but after some close encounters with a king vulture, a pygmy hippo and a diabolical ostrich named Chester, he knew a change in plans was necessary. Shortly thereafter, he lost his best friend and constant companion, a boxer/pitbull mix named DaVinici to cancer and that help set the course of his career. After graduation, Dr. Hunley completed an internship at North Carolina State University and then return to Louisiana to complete a residency in oncology. Following the completion of his residency, he spent two more years serving as an assistant professor at LSU. Although he thoroughly enjoyed teaching at the Veterinary School in Baton Rouge and defended his title of Vet School hot dog eating champ (for 3 years) with pride, the heat and humidity drove him out of the south in 2006. He and his family found home in Rhode Island where he proudly served as the only veterinary oncologist in the whole state. Dr. Hunley is excited to start his next journey here at Gold Coast as our full-time oncologist. Dr. Hunley enjoys all aspects of oncology but his true passion is the study and treatment of mast cell tumors. In his free time Dr. Hunley enjoys traveling with his wife and two children and watching college basketball, playing softball and cycling.
