Expert Reproductive Medicine for Dogs and Cats
Theriogenology is the field of veterinary medicine that focuses on both the medical and genetic aspects of reproduction. Gold Coast Center for Veterinary Care is proud to offer advanced reproductive services for breeders and pet owners through our dedicated theriogenology department, headed by a board-certified veterinary theriogenologist. It is rare to have a theriogenologist work in a private practice like ours, so we are especially proud to be able to offer expert insight and deep clinical experience in the art and science of reproductive medicine to Gold Coast.
Advanced Reproductive Support for Breeders
Whether you are planning your first litter or managing a high-level breeding program, Dr. Margolis and our team are here to support you through every stage of the process, with careful planning, expert diagnostics, and timely interventions.
We provide individualized guidance and hands-on reproductive care for both male and female patients, helping ensure the health of your breeding animals and your next generation.
Pre-Breeding Evaluation Services
Healthy cats and dogs have improved fertility and better conception rates. We offer comprehensive pre-breeding evaluations, including:
- Breeding soundness exams
- Brucellosis testing (for canine-specific STDs)
- Full semen evaluation (motility, morphology and count)
- Hereditary disease screening and consultation
- Infertility diagnostics (male & female)
- LH testing (for ovulation detection in females)
- OFA testing for joint dysplasia/abnormalities
OFA Screening
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals is a breed registry/database for purebred animals. If you are intending to breed your animal and it is a breed for which cardiac disease is known or suspected to be inherited, you should have us screen your pet for cardiac disease prior to breeding. This will allow us to officially certify them if they are healthy to breed.
Our canine and feline reproductive services include:
- Artificial insemination (AI)
- Cesarean sections
- Early pediatric care
- High-risk pregnancy management
- OFA Screening
- Ovulation timing and fertility tracking
- Pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring
- Reproductive counseling and fertility problem-solving
- Semen collection, evaluation, freezing and national and international shipping
(USDA-certified veterinarians on staff) - Whelping assistance and neonatal care
Ovarian Remnant Syndrome Workup
We offer diagnostic workups for ovarian remnant syndrome to identify and treat residual ovarian tissue that may remain after a spay procedure.
Vasectomy
A vasectomy allows for sterilization while preserving hormonal balance and natural behaviors, making it an alternative option to traditional neutering.
Laparoscopic-Assisted Ovary-Sparing Spay
This minimally invasive procedure removes the uterus while leaving one or both ovaries intact, allowing your pet to maintain normal hormonal cycles without the risk of pregnancy.
Laparoscopic Ovariectomy
A laparoscopic ovariectomy involves the removal of the ovaries using small incisions and a camera-guided approach, resulting in less pain and a faster recovery compared to traditional surgery.
Laparoscopic-Assisted Gastropexy
This preventive procedure secures the stomach to the body wall to help reduce the risk of gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat, especially in large-breed dogs.
Tail Docking and Dewclaw Removal
*If deemed medically necessary*
Performed under anesthesia, these procedures are typically done in young puppies for breed standards or injury prevention.
Ear Cropping
*If deemed medically necessary*
Ear cropping is a surgical alteration of the ear shape performed to meet breed standards or for cosmetic reasons, and is done under full anesthesia with careful post-operative monitoring.
